6 Common Types of Diagnostic Medical Equipment

Diagnostic medical equipment is used to diagnose the disease of the patient with the help of which medical professionals are able to prescribe proper treatment to their patients. Diagnostic medical equipment’s are very essential for the treatment of the patient or you can say they play an important role in the recovery of the patients. Wide range of these equipment includes a small thermometer to large MRI machines which are easily available in the market.

1. Stethoscope:

Stethoscopes - Dual Head, Brass Chrome Plated
Stethoscope
It is an acoustic medical device often used to listen to lung and heart sound and this is also considered as the symbol of doctor’s profession. Doctors are often seen with the stethoscope hanging around their neck. Design and the material of the stethoscope differ, as most of the stethoscopes are made of y-shaped rubber tubing. Many stethoscopes have a two sided sound detecting device so that you can reverse, depending on the need to hear high or low frequencies. It is also used in conjunction with sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure which detects sound of blood passing through an artery.

2. Ultra sound machine:

Ultrasound machine is one of the most widely used diagnostic medical equipment in modern medicine and this test is performed by medical health care professionals called sonographers.  Ultrasound is a diagnostic imagining technique that is used to visualize muscles, tendons and many internal organs. The machine send out high-frequency sound waves which makes images so that organs in the body to be examined.  This technology is relatively portable and inexpensive as compare to that of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT). Ultrasound poses no risk to the patient as it does not use ionizing radiation like x-ray or CT scan.

3. X-ray machine:

X-ray machine is also a type of diagnostic medical equipment; approximately 60% of imaging procedures in hospitals are done through this technology. It is essentially a camera which uses x-rays instead of visible light to expose the film. These are also called RGD because they generate ionizing radiation when they are in operation. There are two types of x-ray machines available in the market one is fixed x-ray machines which are not portable another is mobile x-ray systems are designed to take patient care new heights. In operation theatres while operating the patient this mobile x-ray system plays a magnificent role.

4. Electrocardiographs:

This diagnostic medical equipment abbreviated as ECG or EKG. It is a test that checks the problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An ECG translates the electrical activity of the heart into line tracings on paper, in which spikes and dips in the line tracing are known as waves.  ECG is done to find the cause of unexpected chest pain, which could be caused by a heart attack. It also helps to find out the causes of symptoms of other heart diseases.

5. Sphygmomanometers:

Sphygmomanometer- Digital
Sphygmomanometer
This device was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch in 1881; it is often attached to an inflatable air-bladder cuff and uses with a stethoscope used for measuring blood pressure in an artery. There are three types of sphygmomanometer:

a. Digital sphygmomanometer: These are automated and provide blood pressure reading without operating with stethoscope and using cuff. Drawback of digital sphygmomanometer is that they are less accurate.

b. Mercury sphygmomanometer: This device consists of mercury and considered as more reliable and used in high risk scenarios.

c. Aneroid sphygmomanometers: It is comparable to mercury sphygmomanometer in cost, technique and performance and considered safer than mercury sphygmomanometer.

6. Magnetic  Resonance Imaging:

This machine become an essential tool for the diagnosis of central nervous system disorder and is used for the evaluation of various diseases in other organ systems. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves in order to form the images of the body. You are able to have an MRI with an open machine in which your entire body need not to enclose but these are not available everywhere.

Equipment used in Intensive Care Unit

A patient usually is put in an intensive care unit when assistance is required for the normal functioning of the organs of the human body. This situation may arise either after a major surgery, an accident, a cardiac arrest, old age or failure of some major organ or organs of the body. In an intensive care unit there are several kinds of equipment to keep the vital organs of the body functioning. Depending upon the nature of the care required these equipment are used on the patient brought in the intensive care unit.

However, there is some basic specialized equipment which normally every patient is put on in an intensive care unit. These are:

Monitoring Equipment

In an intensive care unit it is essential to have equipment that monitor all the important organs of the body.  The patient in an intensive care unit is connected to a monitor that displays the blood pressure, heart beat, and respiratory rate. The cardiac or heart monitor to trace the activity of the heart, the pulse oximeter to examine and watch the saturation of the oxygen in the blood, the swan-ganz or pulmonary artery catheter to measure the amount of fluid filling the heart, and the arterial lines to continuously measure the blood pressure are the basic monitoring that is displayed on the monitor. The respiratory rate gives the information on how well the patient is breathing by showing the intake of oxygen and breathes out of carbon di oxide. This monitor, if shows any reflection of an abnormal reading the patient can be taken care of as per the need.

Catheters

A patient in the ICU is usually not in a condition to eat or drink orally so is put on an intravenous or IV catheter which may be put into a blood vessel to give fluids and drugs. There are different kinds of catheters that are inserted in the human body depending upon the condition of the patient.

Central Venous Catheter (CVC): The central venous catheter is used to administer frequent medication, to administer multiple IV products, and to measure central venous pressure. It is inserted in the central vein, either in the neck, chest, or in the groin area. Sutures secure the CVC so that it can be used for many days.

Intravenous (IV): This is a plastic catheter inserted into the larger vein of the neck since patient in the ICU usually require multiple medications, nutrition preparations and blood products. Patients in the ICU often have many IVs.

Chest Tubes: Chest tubes help in draining off the extra fluid that accumulates in the chest to enable the lungs to expand so that it can breathe normally.

Urinary Catheter: Urinary catheter is inserted through the urethra into the bladder for the continuous drain of the urine. It also helps in examining and managing the kidney function by assessing the output of the urine.

Life Supportive Devices in the ICU:

When a patient is very critical and is unable to breathe by him or herself they are put on a ventilator. It supports the patient in breathing by attaching an endotracheal tube into the mouth of the patient and to the ventilator.

Depending upon the illness, age and the need of the patient other ICU equipment is used.

All the equipment being used in the hospital should be of very superior quality and of latest technique to be able to save a precious life.

GPC Medical guarantees all the users of its medical equipment that they are very conscious in delivering the best products to all its clients in all parts of the world.

Different Types of Disposable Gloves

Generally there are two types of gloves which are disposable and reusable gloves. Disposable gloves are thin and allow the user to retain good touch sensitivity and dexterity but they have poor chemical resistance. On the other hand reusable gloves are thick and offer more protection than disposable gloves. Importance of these gloves depends on the demand of the user as each type of glove has its own characteristic. These gloves are used for various purposes such as housework, gardening, cooking and medical use.  In medical profession disposable gloves helps to control the infection and these are the common example of personal protective equipment worn to prevent infection. Disposable gloves are designed for use on one patient only. Types of disposable gloves are:

Disposable Nitrile Gloves:

These gloves are extremely durable and tear resistant which provide great chemical resistance. These gloves are recommended for medical use as they have the highest grade of protection and also provide an effective barrier from blood borne pathogens. Nitrile gloves are considered to be one of the strongest types of disposable glove and are safe for people who are allergic to latex.

Disposable Vinyl Gloves:

These gloves are usually called utility grade gloves because they may not be suited for mostly medical procedure and these are an alternative to gloves made of latex or nitrile. These gloves are used for lots of purposes such as basic house hold clean up task, light industrial work. You can get both powdered and powder free disposable vinyl gloves.

Disposable Poly Gloves:

Poly gloves are ideal for food service operations which require constant glove changing. These are an inexpensive solution for a variety of task that require hand protection for sanitary and safety purpose. Now a days these gloves are more in demand as people become much concerned for their hygiene.

Disposable Latex Gloves:

Latex gloves are good for biological and water-based material but poor for organic solvent. These gloves give little chemical protection and can trigger latex allergies because latex is a natural substance; it contains proteins that may cause allergic reaction. If any person who develops any allergy while using latex gloves should stop using these gloves.  It is very hard to detect puncture holes on disposable latex gloves.

Disposable Neoprene Gloves:

Disposable Latex Gloves
Latex Examination Gloves
Neoprene or polychloroprene is a family of synthetic rubbers that are produced by polymerization of chloroprene. It exhibits good chemical stability and flexibility over a wide temperature range. These are very thick, tough and protective gloves. Heavy duty neoprene gloves are used in industrial application which offers protection against a wide range of harsh substance. You can use these gloves for acids, alcohols, fuels, hydrocarbons, phenols, peroxides and good for most hazardous chemicals.

If you need some disposable gloves you find lot of sites on internet where you purchase disposable gloves of your choice. Before buying gloves you need to consider three things which are:
  1. Size of the gloves should fit well and comfortable.
  2. Protection of your hands is important so choose the gloves of right material because all materials are not equally well in various conditions.
  3. Gloves cannot be allergic for your hands.
The glove industry is continually improving the material used to manufacture gloves. Nitrile, natural rubber latex and vinyl are more widely used for disposable gloves. Each material has features which make it ideal for specific applications for example nitrile is widely used across all industries that require high performance from a single use glove and vinyl is the least costly material and often chosen for industrial use when worker changes gloves frequently in the course of a shift due to any reason as a need to avoid cross-contamination.

Safer IV Cannula

An IV cannula is seen as the first necessity when a person is put on external help for medication. The insertion of the needle into the vein for the setting of the cannula and the catheter for providing nutrients, medication, and for taking blood sample from the patient’s body is seen as a painful task. However, with the invention of the safer IV cannula this procedure has made it a much safer and painless job.

How is the Safety IV Cannula different from the IV Cannula?

  • The Safety IV Cannula aims at providing maximum safety to the user while giving minimum pain at the time of insertion.

  • The improved stainless steel needle which is better beveled and siliconised for painless penetration into the vein and a smoother touch to the skin.

  • The improved design of the needle hub gives a better stability with a much stronger grip to control the cannulation and also a better thumb radius for a proper grip when inserting the cannula.

  • The needle with an improved tip can be better handled during insertion and makes the process much easier and resistance free.

  • The catheter which has been further thinly walled to allow maximum flow rate which helps in giving faster results.

  • A vented hub for higher flow rate and quick easy confirmation of correct vascular access. This prevents the formation of air bubbles and also is better protected to avoid blood spillage.

  • The inclusion of a threaded stopper in this new improved cannula helps for secure closure of the medication.

  • In the previous cannula there were chances of the para medical staff being hurt during the pulling back and also of reusing the needle but in the safety IV Cannula with its improved design both these possibilities are completely eliminated.
GPC Medical Limited has been one of the first Indian medical companies to manufacture and supply the improvised Safety IV Cannula.
